A New Way To See Your Body

Imagine waking up tomorrow morning. You’re still half asleep, the day just beginning. You walk into the bathroom, catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror… and almost automatically your mind starts its familiar routine.

My stomach. My thighs. My arms. My face. I wish this looked different.

In those early moments of the day, does your mind start judging your body before you’ve even fully woken up? And if so, would you like a little relief from that?

For many people, those thoughts arrive so quickly they feel automatic. We barely notice they’re happening.

But what if there was another way to see your body? Not by pretending you suddenly love every inch of it. Not by forcing yourself to think positive thoughts. Just by noticing something you may have overlooked.

Your body is so much more than something to be looked at.

That face you critique? It’s the one that smiles at people you love, that expresses joy, surprise, laughter, and care. It’s the face that has greeted mornings, endured hard days, and shown up for your life again and again.

Those arms you judge? They’ve comforted people you care about. They’ve held loved ones close, carried bags, prepared meals, created things, and reached out when someone needed support.

Your stomach and abdomen, so often a place of criticism, are also the center of your strength and movement. They allow you to bend, stretch, twist, sit, stand, and move through your day. They are part of everything that lets you live your life in motion.

Your hips and thighs, so often compared and evaluated, are what carry you forward. They help you walk through your home, move through your world, sit beside someone you love, and take you from one moment of your life to the next.

For those struggling with body image or an eating disorder, it’s easy to become incredibly skilled at noticing what feels wrong about our bodies. We can spend so much time and energy evaluating our bodies while rarely appreciating everything they’re doing behind the scenes.

It’s a bit like standing in a breathtaking garden but only noticing the weeds.

The next time you catch yourself asking, “How does this body part look?” try gently adding another question: “What does this body part make possible?”

That single question shifts the conversation.

Your arms become the place where loved ones are hugged.

Your stomach becomes the place that allows movement, strength, and stability.

Your hips and thighs become the reason you can walk beside a friend, explore a new place, or simply move through your day.

This isn’t about convincing yourself to feel any sort of way.

It’s about remembering your body has always been valuable.

And sometimes, that’s a much gentler place to begin.

A Simple Exercise

Choose one body part you’ve struggled to appreciate. Instead of looking at it, spend a few quiet minutes thinking about what it allows you to experience.

Finish these sentences:

  • This part of my body helps me…

  • Because of this body part, I’m able to…

  • One experience I would have missed without it is…

  • Today, I want to thank this part of my body for…

Sometimes healing doesn’t begin with loving what you see.

Sometimes it begins by appreciating what your body has been doing for you all along.
